On Thursday, Austin City Council passed a revised compromise item that would extend meter hours to midnight Thursday through Saturday only. The original proposal passed in March would have extended meter hours Monday through Saturday.
As a result of A.A.M.P.E.D.’s efforts, the compromise also includes discounted parking for downtown service industry workers and designated load-in zones for musicians where musicians can unload their equipment without being ticketed and harassed by police.
Since April, A.A.M.P.E.D. (Austinites Against Metered Parking Extensions Downtown) has worked with the downtown community and downtown groups who feel negatively affected by the proposed meter extension — these groups include service industry, musicians, volunteers, church members, and people who live downtown. Council was forced to address the organized pressure of these groups against the widely unpopular meter extensions, and this pressure resulted in the compromise item.
A.A.M.P.E.D. will continue with the parking meter issue, but plans on broadening its scope to issues affecting all of downtown.
Special thanks to Mary Krenek, Clint Dolenz, Heather Fazio, Chris Nielsen, Jenn Studebaker, Jessica Ellison, and Randy Peterson for their efforts in the fight.
