On Monday, March 30th TAG will host a panel of experts discussing Civil Asset Forfeiture reform and total repeal.
There are a variety of bills filed in the legislature that attempt to provide us with safeguards to police abuse, specifically Asset Forfeiture, which is a practice used widely by police to seize personal property often times without any charges being filed.
Panelists and Special Guests Include :
- Representative David Simpson, Author of HB 3171
- Matt Simpson, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
- Derek Cohen, Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF)
- Matt Miller, Institute for Justice (IJ)
- Michael Searle, TAG Steering Committee
TAG will be discussing the various bills that have been filed with special focus on Representative David Simpson’s House Bill 3171. This bill, if passed, would virtually end the abuse of Asset Forfeiture. But we will need your help to make sure it gets out of committee to the House floor. This bill would require a criminal conviction in order to seize a citizen’s property while strengthening reporting, curbing Equitable Sharing, and ending the practice that allows police departments to use seized funds as they see fit.
